Money Held Back
One year and counting - $30 million given the federal government in exchange for a 10 year moratorium fishing salmon commercially off the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Several hundred trollers were banned last year and they'll be denied access to the salmon again this year under Canada's agreement with the Americans. Tony Bennett is the regional director for the Long Beach area where most of the fishers live.

Legions Vote On Merge
Royal Canadian Legions, branches 55 and 169 are talking merger. Bill Groenveldt is president of Branch 55. He said a lot of people are still interested in the legions - membership is more than 800 between the 2 branches - but not so many people come out any more. They'll meet in March to see where they are. Each branch has clear title to their property, But Greoneveldt says everything is suffering and things are not going well.

City Hall Thief Discharged

PORT ALBERNI - A 55 year old grandmother with no criminal record was a candidate for a discharge despite taking about 2 thousand dollars in petty cash out of a city hall float. Catherine Stephen has to live with the crime, provincial court judge Brian Klaver said, in a small town where the incident has been well publicized. But Port Alberni is a compassionate town, he added, and she is not likely going to steal again.

$30 million Withheld
Word is the federal government is holding the 30 million dollars paid by the Americans to tie up the BC salmon fleet. The fishermen were paid nothing last year and are facing the same this year. It appears to be complicated by overlapping federal agencies.

City Prices Clinic
City Hall has fixed the price of the Elizabeth Street Clinic at $400,000 - $160,000 from the rural areas of the Alberni Valley. Rural directors for Cherry Creek and Sproat Lake have meetings scheduled with property owners with March 2nd now set as the date when they will likely return to vote on the spending package - including a list of grants - on the table.

Students are coming to school with better technology than what they're finding. In fact, consultants say the school district's high tech may be slowing down the multi-tasking students. A scathing report on the half million dollar a year high tech spending surprised at least one school trustee. Trustee Glenn Wong said he thought the district was operating with a plan. It is not.

As reported on AlberniPortal.ca this past June, a strange vehicle was spotted traveling the roads and sidestreets of Port Alberni, capturing images for Google Streetview. The small blue car driving around Port Alberni with a 2-metre droid on top was one of 4 Google Cars exploring Vancouver Island this past summer.

Official announcement from the Pacific Rim Health Cooperative on the 2 family doctors who will be working out of the Elizabeth Street building. The Alberni Family Medical Clinic welcomes Alberni born and raised, Dr Pardeep Rai who will finish residency at the University of Manitoba and join them in July. He is married with an infant son.

Kuu-us Loses Contract
The Kuus Crisis Line is looking at as many as a dozen layoffs after losing the bid to offer the island regional service. The contract was awarded to an agency in Nanaimo. The Port Alberni society is now reviewing its options. They still have a teen crisis line, and they also operate a couple of social programs for the homeless.

Class Sizes Issue
Alberni's small high schools match up well with provincial averages for class sizes in the provincial report. The average is 21 students to a class, compared to 25 provincially. Separately ADSS had 22 students average per class, while Ucluelet Secondary, just 17.3. The middle schools a bit higher than the provincial average at 27 students per class on the average.

City Hall Wants More
City hall in Port Alberni has asked the region for more money to support its economic development office. This is not off the wall, because the rural areas and even Tofino shared $18,000 last year in a grant for the office. This year, thought, city hall wants double, because Catalyst Paper didn't pay its taxes last year and this year who knows.

PORT ALBERNI – “One of the Good Guys” has retired. Port Alberni RCMP Corporal Rob Foster was celebrated Saturday night by his RCMP family, and people from the many communities he has touched through his 33 ½ year career.

City Hall has come up with still another price on the Elizabeth Street building. This one is replacement cost of the building according to a local assessor and is almost $600,000. City Hall initially offered it to the regional district for $400,000. The City has had one offer on the building and it came nowhere near the asking price.
