This story is another shocking "event waiting to happen"! The fact a citizen of Port Alberni came forward and potentially saved lives isn't shocking at all! After spending 3 weeks in the community, culminating in "Child Safety Seminars" given to the kids of Port Alberni, by the Kinsmen of Port Alberni, I can honestly tell you, THIS community cares, takes care of it's own and keeps an" eye out" for all others. Port Alberni set's the example once again!

This letter is in response to this city's disappointing decision regarding manufactured home parks.

When this first came before council I was asking them for a Manufactured Home Park Redevelopment Tenant Assistance Policy.

The city has "expert" knowledge of how park redevelopment under this province's requirements affects mobile home owners. It is called Falls Road Park. Council decision was reached after two public hearings and an on-site investigation.

Both city council and city staff have to be the best-informed municipal group in B.C. on provincial tenant assistance policies. They have received nearly every B.C. municipality's progressive Manufactured Home Park Redevelopment Tenant Assistance Policy for over two years.

Also news articles from across B.C. on park redevelopment's positive outcome, with a tenant assistance policy, and negative ones without a tenant assistance policy in place.

I feel this policy has been stripped of its original reason for being put on council's plate. I want to know what happened to the tenant assistance you were served. "Where's the Beef?"

Thank you Richard for the information.

The wind brought down a tree across the highway on the west side of the hump this morning sometime around 0920. I had passed through westbound at 0830 and it was clear. I was heading back at 0935ish and discovered the tree blocking the highway and all traffic stopped. When I arrived someone had already trimmed all the branches off and the driver of the white truck cut the tree in half, manouvered his vehicle and attached a chain to it, then pulled the tree off to the side of the highway. The other 3 guys then cleared the branches and everything off the road and allowed the traffic to continue its journey in short order. Only about 4 or 5 vehicles eastbound were held up, and about 25 or 30 or so westbound vehicles were held up as well.

Unfortunately I was not able to get pics of the tree before they cut it.

Kudos to the four individuals for their prompt action!

It would seem that Mr. Savard is confusing actively going out and looking for criminals, which is a vigilantism, with stopping a violent attack initiated by a criminal, which is self-defense.

As far a carrying a firearm for self-defense goes, the Police and a civilian carry a gun for the same reason, protection of life. The difference is simply the mission statement. The police carry for safety when they confront evil. The civilian carries for when evil confronts them.

Why people like Mr Savard continue to suggest that we give the CRIMINAL the benefit of the doubt as to their intentions is mindboggling. Projecting our morals and values onto someone who intentional brought a weapon in order to achieve their goals is beyond naivete and borders on a neurosis of some kind.

"When seconds count the police are only minutes away" is more than just a saying. It's a fact. The law-abiding should be aware of this and act accordingly.
